Launching My Business With Roll-On Perfume

Making roll-on perfume involves formulating a perfume combination using essential oils, absolutes, resins and other aroma ingredients and suspending those ingredients in carrier oils. Spray perfumes meanwhile suspend these aroma ingredients in alcohol. The alcohol accentuates the dispersion of the aroma ingredients resulting is a higher impact. The alcohol based perfume can also be sprayed on clothes which increases the life of the perfume. Alcohol however can be harsh and drying to the skin and hair. Carrier oil based roll-on perfumes on the other hand are very nurturing to the skin and moisturizing, packed with nutrients. In the long term I intend to make both carrier oil roll-on and alcohol spray perfumes. But for now I am starting with roll-on.

Why Start With Roll-On Perfume?

Sourcing organic or at least fully natural alcohol for perfuming purposes has turned out to be rather challenging. You see, alcohol based perfume is made using what is called ‘denatured’ alcohol. Denaturing involves adding bittering agents to the alcohol, thus making the alcohol unpalatable. By doing this we are able to purchase the alcohol without the consumable alcohol tax, which is a hefty tax. Unfortunately most denatured alcohols use synthetic bittering agents. There are some natural options and I have made progress in sourcing these, but for now I decided to go ahead and launch my company with roll-on perfume as the natural and organic carrier oils are much easier to source.

Benefits Of Roll On Perfume

Roll-on perfume offers several benefits including: easy and precise application, portability, less risk of over-application, ideal for targeted pulse points, travel-friendly, often more affordable, and suitable for sensitive skin; making it a convenient choice for those who want a controlled and subtle fragrance application throughout the day.

Key advantages of roll-on perfume:

  • Precise application: The rollerball allows for targeted application on specific areas like wrists, neck, and behind the ears, preventing over-spraying.
  • Portable and travel-friendly: Compact size fits easily in a purse or pocket, making it ideal for on-the-go touch-ups.
  • Less mess: No risk of spills or sprays getting on clothes.
  • Gentle on skin: Often contains no alcohol, making it suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Controllable fragrance intensity: You can easily adjust the amount of fragrance by rolling on more or less depending on the desired scent strength.
  • Cost-effective: Generally more affordable than traditional spray perfumes.

Long History of Oil Perfume

Some of the oldest forms of perfume are oil based. For thousands of years we have been infusing oils with aromatic ingredients and applying the perfumed oils to our skin and hair. Alcohol perfume is actually a fairly recent invention.

What Carrier Oils Am I Starting With?

Many natural roll-on perfumes use Fractionated Coconut Oil. I wanted to be a little more creative and take advantage of the nutritional opportunities of various carrier oils, so I decided to start with Almond Oil and Cucumber Seed Oil.

Cucumber Seed Carrier Oil

A natural oil extracted from the seeds of cucumbers. It has several potential benefits. It has potent antioxidant properties, which can fight off free radicals caused by oxidative stress when the skin is exposed to damaging UV light. Cucumber Seed Oil even promotes cell regeneration making this an excellent choice for mature, aging skin. A high content of natural tocopherols and phytosterols further enhance its protective and nutritive benefits for personal care. Phytosterols are also known for their ability to nourish and stimulate the skin cells to encourage regeneration of healthy skin cells. Cucumber Seed Oil contains a significant percentage of Omega-9 Oleic Acid and Omega-6 Linoleic Acid and can be effective in treating dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, acne and sunburned skin.

The aroma: cucumber seed oil smells, well, a bit like cucumbers. Though faint, the scent is fruity, tangy, fresh, cucumber. It adds just a kind of tangy freshness to perfume formulas.

Almond Carrier Oil

Rich source of nutrients, including vitamin E, magnesium, and phosphorus. It provides several benefits for skin, hair, and overall health. Almond oil deeply hydrates and nourishes the skin, making it soft and supple. Its anti-inflammatory properties help soothe irritated and sensitive skin. The oil contains linoleic acid, which helps regulate oil production and improve skin texture. Vitamin E in almond oil is an antioxidant that protects the skin from free radical damage, reducing signs of aging.

The aroma: High quality almond oil does not have much of an aroma. Even so, the chemistry can still alter the scent of aroma ingredients and so I test my formulations in the carrier oil before finalizing my product.

How to Properly Apply Rollerball Perfumes

  • Start by selecting a roll-on perfume that you love
  • Apply the roll-on perfume to your pulse points
  • Pulse points include your wrists, neck, and behind your ears
  • Roll the perfume onto your skin in a gentle, circular motion
  • Avoid rubbing the perfume into your skin, as this can alter the scent
  • Allow the perfume to dry on it’s own
  • Reapply the rollerball perfume throughout the day as needed
  • Store your rollerball perfume in a cool, dry place to maintain it’s quality
